Acne Myths Part One: Five Myths About Acne Breakouts

If you’re looking for an acne treatment regimen, then the first thing that you need to do is to understand the myths and facts about acne. There are actually so many myths about acne out there that we needed two blog entries at the Murad Skin Deep Blog in order to cover them all! In this entry, we’ll cover the first five common acne myths.

Acne Myths and Facts: Part 1Acne Myth: It Doesn’t Matter What You Eat
At one point, somebody probably told you that greasy foods and chocolate would cause acne breakouts. Then, somebody told you that those rumors were just a myth. The truth it does matter what you eat. It absolutely matters what you put into your body because healthy skin begins with a healthy body. Eat a diet full of antioxidant-rich fresh fruits and vegetables and low in processed food and junk food and your skin will thank you for it.

Acne Myth: Benzoyl Peroxide Products Will Keep Your Skin Clear
Benzoyl Peroxide will dry your skin, which will get rid of existing blemishes. However, Benzoyl Peroxide doesn’t prevent future breakouts and so it can’t give you clear skin in the long-term. To get long-term clear skin, you’ll want to address the root of acne breakouts: clogged pores from the over-production of accumulation of skin cells. Look for acne products with Salicylic Acid, such as Murad Acne Complex®. Salicylic Acid clears away dead skin cells to help freekeep the skin’s surface free of debris to give you a foundation for clear skin for the future. If you’re not combatting the cause of acne, then you’re not really effectively combating acne at all. You’re just responding to the symptoms of acne. Select a topical acne medication like Salicylic Acid that treats the causes of acne for long lasting results.

Acne Myth: Avoiding Caffeine Will Give You Clear Skin
Excessive amounts of caffeine can lead to an increase in acne breakouts because excessive caffeine can stimulate the adrenal gland. The adrenal gland is what produces the hormones that cause both skin cell production and sebum (oil) production. However, if your caffeine intake during the week is mild to moderate, you won’t see an impact on your skin simply by cutting out caffeine. Reducing your caffeine intake will only reduce your breakouts if your caffeine intake is significant.

Acne Myth: You Can Exfoliate Acne Away
Think of all of the commercials that you’ve seen where a person happily washes his or her face while you’re told that you need to simply exfoliate away the top layer of your skin to get clear skin. The truth is that you need to exfoliate both on the surface of the skin as well within the hair follicles where dead skin cells clog the pore and cause acne breakouts. Not only do you need to exfoliate, but you also need to do so without “scrubbing” your skin, which can cause irritation and further acne breakouts. Look for acne products with Salicylic Acid, which is an Beta Hydroxy Acid (AHA) that exfoliates both on the surface and within hair follicles without irritating skin.

Acne Myth: Sun Tanning Diminishes and Heals Acne Breakouts
Sun tanning, whether outdoors or in a tanning bed, may dry out existing acne blemishes and even mask post-acne marks and non-inflamed blemishes beneath the skin. However, nothing is more damaging to your skin that UV rays. In addition to the long-term damage to your skin (including wrinkles and sun spots as you age), the drying of your skin from UV rays may increase your chances of acne scars or post-acne marks. If you think getting rid of acne is hard, it’s much easier than finding an acne scar treatment. Don’t fix one skin problem by creating another skin problem with excessive sun exposure.

I have tried different acne treatments but I have to say this is the best one ever!!! It has done a miracle in my face. My face looks clear and very healthy it worked so good that my sister and my sister’s friend got it for themselves. It is a very good product and I recommend it to every single person I meet! MURAD Rocks! Get Yours!

Been almost 2 weeks and my skin is 100% Better.

At the beginning I did notice the slightest amount of purging on my right cheek, but it went away soon enough. The product is unique, I think, because unlike most other acne treatments, Murad actually feels good to use and as far as I can see, works much better than any product with BP. Murad dries my skin out just a little bit, not enough to actually crack my skin, but enough to make it just noticeably rougher. It is, however, very easily remedied with another application of their skin perfecting lotion. I hope that Murad will continue to work in the future. So far so good! Get Yours!
