Three Drinks That Are the Enemy of Healthy Skin

If you follow the Murad Skin Deep blog and its skin care and acne treatment advice, then you already know that one of the keys to healthy, acne-free, youthful-looking skin is to stay hydrated. That means you need to both “eat” your water in the form of healthy fruits and vegetables and drink water daily. From anti aging skin treatment products to acne treatment products, nothing will make your skin healthier than water. Unfortunately, we’ve also found that many people mistake the word “beverage” for “water.” There are actually a number of beverages that work against the goal of having healthy skin. Here are the worst things you can drink if you want healthy, glowing skin.

Drinks for Healthy SkinSoda Pop and Skin Health: There’s absolutely nothing good about drinking soda pop on a regular basis. When it comes to your skin, this manifests in two ways. Caffeine and high amounts of sugar, both of which are present in soda pop, can interfere with the digestive process, basically shutting it down. This means you’re not absorbing nutrients from the foods you eat. Proper nutrients, particularly from fruits and vegetables that are high in antioxidants, are essential to healthy skin. Healthy skin also requires that you have a balanced pH level in your body. Soda pop is highly acidic and can throw off the natural pH balance of your body and therefore your skin. The health and appearance of your skin is just one of many compelling reasons to stop drinking soda pop in your daily routine.

Coffee and Acne Breakouts: While a reasonable amount of coffee is fine, if you’re a caffeine addict, you may want to be careful. It is proven that caffeine can trigger your “stress hormones,” specifically the adrenal gland which produces the androgens that can lead to hormonal acne. A little bit of caffeine won’t hurt, but if you find yourself hovering around the coffee pot, back off for healthy skin! Opt for green tea instead. You’ll still get a caffeine fix, and it will come loaded with antioxidant skin health benefits as well.

Sugary Juices and Punches and Healthy Skin: The refined sugars used in most juice drinks and punches (including many sports drinks and flavored waters) have been shown to cause a spike in insulin that can also result in a spike in androgen production and trigger hormonal acne. Stick to natural fruit juices and water with a touch of fruit added for not only the best hydration, but also the best impact on your skin.

Just as what you eat can impact the health of your body and therefore the health of your skin, what you drink can have just as big an impact. It doesn’t matter what skin vitamins or products you’re using. If you don’t keep a responsible hydration schedule that’s big on “good hydration” and low on unhealthy beverages, your skin will pay the price. And of course, at any time, the best thing you can possibly drink is pure water.
