College Distractions Can Mean Bad Study Habits, Bad Eating Habits and Earning Bad Grades in Skincare

When most high school students head off to college in the fall, they’re warned about gaining the “Freshman Ten”—the pudgy surprise weight that comes from less sleep, less exercise and free access to  unhealthy cafeteria food, late night pizza, soda and beer. But what about “Freshman Skin?” The same unhealthy factors that lead to pudge can lead to prematurely dull and even acneic skin. So what can you do to ensure that you graduate with skin as glowing as the first day that your parents dropped you off at the dorm? Here are some tips for healthy skin care habits—a education that will really pay off now and in the future.

Minimize Late Nights and Get Enough Sleep

During your college years you often stay up late, pull “all-nighters” and generally don’t get enough sleep. Whether your lack of sleep is due to too much studying or too much college fun, the impact on your skin is the same. Lack of sleep creates stress, and stress shows on your skin. Stress often shows on your skin in the form of acne breakouts. While acne treatments can help with the symptoms of stress damage caused by lack of sleep, no acne treatment can solve the problem of lack of sleep. Your body needs sleep. Don’t let college teach you that there’s anything healthy (or good for your skin) about staying up all night.

Sometimes staying up late also means skipping your nighttime skin care regimen altogether. That’s a big mistake, since consistency is key when it comes to skin care.

Make sure you “get enough sleep” and make that sleep count by doing good things for your skin while you sleep—hydrate it and replenish it with the antioxidant power of Vitamin-C.

“I have spent years trying to find a good night cream and now my search has ended. This night cream isn’t too thick or too thin. Instant pick me up. I love the way the product smells as does my spouse. I’m outside frequently and since starting with this product have not had any chapped dry skin after a cold winter day out side.” executivemom, Wisconsin

Diet Does Matter When It Comes to Healthy Skin

Paying attention to your diet when you hit college isn’t just about your weight. Diet is important to overall health and energy. We all know that you’ll need maximum energy to hit the books (or the fraternity and sorority parties). But you may not be thinking about how important diet is to your skin’s health as well. It’s very common when you first get to college to start to eat a great deal of processed foods. Processed foods not only give you very little overall nutritional value, but they also don’t provide your body with the antioxidants that it needs to fight off free radical damage from daily environmental pollution and give you glowing, healthy skin. Pair antioxidant skin care with a healthy skin diet that’s rich in fresh fruits and vegetables. Your skin will look better, you’ll feel better and you’ll be gaining some protection against gaining the “Freshmen Ten”.

Make Your Skin Care Regimen Part of Your Daily Routine

One of the best parts of college is the fact that you set your schedule.  Whether you are a full time or part time student, you’re figuring out what to do with your time.  It’s an important lesson in prioritizing and organizing.  Make sure that you’ve got your skincare regimen marked on the calendar day and night every day of the week and make it happen regardless of when you get up or go to bed! And no cheating! Be sure to include all three steps of your skin care regimen: cleanse, treat and hydrate.

Choose Your Skin Care Products Wisely

College is a time of exploration. It can also be a time when cash is a little tighter. When those two things combine, you may feel compelled to experiment with some different skin care products. Everybody’s journey to healthy skin is different, and you should take the time to find the right skin care products for you. Just be careful to look for the right things in your skin care products. Choose skin care products that help to balance your skin tone or control acne breakouts using quality ingredients, antioxidants and Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) and Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHAs). Stay away from products designed to dry out your skin. Of course, Murad skin care products will keep your skin healthy and radiant, but we understand that college may be a time when you want to try as many new things as possible.

College is a magical time. Be sure to enjoy every moment of it. Just remember that your relationship with your skin will be something to nurture long after your roommates are gone! Take care of your skin (and yourself) while you enjoy your college years.
