Winter Sports and Your Skin: Skin Care for Sports in the Snow

For many people, the coming of winter means the return of their favorite outdoor sports. From snowboarding to ice hockey and every snow sport in between, the chance to get out and have fun in the snow is evident in the popularity of ski resorts and outdoor skating venues. However, being outside in the harsh winter elements can have a negative impact on your skin no matter how good your skin care products are. How do you keep beautiful, healthy skin if your preferred athletic activity involves being outside in the cold? Here are some tips from the skin care experts at Murad.

Skin Care Tips for Winter SportsProtect Your Skin with a Moisturizer with UV Protection The most important thing you can do for your skin while engaged in outdoor winter sports is to protect it from the elements—the dry winter air and UV rays from the sun. In fact, keep in mind that when you’re participating in an outdoor winter sport, your UV exposure may actually be heightened from what you’d experience on a beach during the summer. That’s because you’re not only receiving the direct rays from the sun, but you’re also getting the diffused rays reflected by the snow. Make sure that whenever you go outside to play in the winter, your skin is protected with a daytime moisturizer that includes SPF protection. If you are using acne treatment products to help get clear skin, make sure your moisturizer is oil-free! You wouldn’t hit the beach or go hiking in the summer without sun block or sunscreen. The same should be true for outdoor winter activities.

How to Have Glowing, Healthy Summer Skin in the Fall

How do you keep that bronzed summer skin look after summer is over? With some effective skin care products and other tricks, you can maintain your summer glow well into fall.

Don’t Use a Tanning Bed!
While it may be tempting to take a trip to your local tanning bed, don’t! Using tanning beds is just as bad (if not worse) for your skin as lying out in the sun. Tanning damages the skin while accentuating and accelerating the signs of aging. And even if you take good care of your skin otherwise with anti aging or anti wrinkle treatments, it won’t make up for all of the damage tanning does. Plus, tanning (just like sunbathing) increases your risk of serious conditions like skin cancer.

Do Get Outside—and Don’t Forget the Sun Protection!
It’s important to spend time outdoors throughout the year. Sunlight is the best source of Vitamin D, which is vital for your health and well-being. Take beautiful fall walks or bike rides, pick up an outdoor sport like Frisbee golf, or just sit on your porch and enjoy the beautiful fall colors. But whatever you do, wear sunscreen or sun block to protect against harmful UV rays, whether it’s cloudy out or not.

Be Gentle With Your Skin: Skin Care Tips for All Skin Types

Whether your skin care concerns include finding an effective acne treatment plan or a way to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, there’s one skin care rule that applies to all skin types and skin care product needs: Be gentle with your skin. Your skin is your body’s largest organ, and it’s important to take good care of it. Yet many people’s daily skin care routines include multiple steps that are harsh on their skin. Here are four tips on how to treat your skin gently to keep it healthy and glowing.

Skin Care Tips for Gentle Skin CareSkin Care Tip: Limit Long, Hot Baths and Showers
While taking a long, hot bath or shower is a relaxing way to end the day, it’s actually very unhealthy for your skin. Increased exposure to hot water and the common chemicals in water can strip natural oils and moisturizers from your skin and leave you dehydrated. Whenever possible, limit the amount of time you spend in the bath or shower, and opt for warm water instead of hot water. You’ll be doing a favor for your skin and the planet!

Five Fall Skin Care Tips

Fall is in the air, and while many of us love the cooler temperatures and beautiful autumn leaves, the arrival of fall means that the drier, harsher weather of winter is soon to come. Since these conditions can be difficult on your skin, it’s best to plan ahead and adjust your skin care routine and skin care products now. From moisture-maximizing advice to pointers on how to keep that summer glow going, here are five fall skin care tips from the experts at Murad to help keep your skin healthy and beautiful from now through winter.

Fall Skin Care Tip #1: Use Moisturizer
The air begins to dry out in the fall and will continue to get drier and drier as winter approaches. If you aren’t already, begin using an antioxidant-based, moisture-rich cream not only on your face but also on your body. Be sure to get into the habit of using both a day time moisturizer and a night time cream to intensely hydrate your skin. As the air gets drier in the fall and winter, skin can become red or irritated or even break out from over-drying. And when your skin is dry, fine lines and wrinkles are more apparent. Keep your skin hydrated and healthy by eating water-rich foods and applying moisturizer daily. Just because the leaves are dry doesn’t mean that your skin has to be dry too!
