The Expert’s Guide to Rosacea
Did you know that more than 14 million people in the United States have Rosacea? The condition has also affected many familiar famous faces such as Renee Zellweger, Mariah Carey and Princess Diana. So what exactly is Rosacea and how do you treat it? Everyday Health enlisted an expert panel to get their insight on causes and treatments for this condition. And the panel included our very own expert,
Dr. Howard Murad, along with other dermatologists and industry professionals, all providing their expertise and opinions on this topic.
Rosacea is a long-term condition that affects the skin, creating redness, most commonly on the face. Most Rosacea sufferers see the most redness at the center of their face and may experience swelling or burning in these areas.
In Everyday Health’s panel, Dr. Murad explains the various triggers that can increase the redness on the skin, including blood flow, skin bacteria, skin mites, sun, irritation of follicles and psychological factors. He also discusses Inclusive Health, a three-pronged approach to optimal health, as a method to effectively lessen the effects of Rosacea. By treating your skin with topical treatments, following a proper diet and supplement routine as well as identifying the stressors that can trigger a flare up, one can lessen the irritating symptoms of Rosacea.
Diet plays an important part in reducing Rosacea symptoms and Dr. Murad offers a list of foods to include in your diet, as well as those to avoid. Whole grains, seeds, nuts and fresh fruits and vegetables are all foods to eat to improve the condition.
The panel also offered tips to make embarrassing and painful redness less noticeable. Dr. Murad advised using calming moisturizers and when trying new product, always test them on your neck and arm before using on your face to avoid reactions.
